✅ Step 2: Dry

  • Dry the cookware promptly and completely with a lint-free cloth or paper towel.
  • If you see a bit of black on the towel, don’t worry—it’s just seasoning. Totally normal.

✅ Step 3: Oil

  • Rub a light layer of cooking oil on the entire surface.
  • Wipe away excess until it’s no longer greasy.
  • This protects the seasoning and prevents rust.

🔁 How to Restore a Rusty Cast Iron Pan

Rust can happen—even with great care. No worries, it’s fixable!

🔧 3 Steps to Restore and Re-Season

🔨 Step 1: Scrub

  • Use steel wool and warm, soapy water to scour off the rust.
  • It’s okay to use soap here since you’ll re-season afterward.
  • Rinse and dry thoroughly.

🛢️ Step 2: Oil

  • Apply a very thin layer of cooking oil (inside, outside, and handle).
  • Avoid using too much—over-oiling can cause a sticky surface.

🔥 Step 3: Bake

  • Place the cookware upside down on the top oven rack.
  • Put a sheet of foil or a tray on the bottom rack to catch any drips.
  • Bake at 450–500°F (230–260°C) for 1 hour.
  • Let cool in the oven. Repeat if needed to restore a smooth, black patina.

🧠 Pro Tip

  • Avoid soaking in water or using the dishwasher.
  • Always dry your cookware right after washing.
  • Store in a dry place with the lid ajar (if applicable).

FAQs

Can I soak my cast iron pan?

No! Soaking cast iron in water is a recipe for rust. If you need to remove sticky or stubborn stuck-on food, use a nylon scrubbing brush or a pan scraper and rinse under warm water. Be sure to thoroughly dry your pan.

Note: If you do accidentally leave your pan in water for too long and it develops rust, don't panic! With a little extra care, you can remove the rust and continue using your cast iron cookware.

Can I use soap to wash cast iron?

Contrary to popular belief, you can use a small amount of soap to clean cast iron cookware! Large amounts of soap can strip the seasoning off your pan, but you can easily re-season your pan as needed.

Can I use steel wool or a metal scrubber to clean my cast iron?

No! We recommend using a pan scraper or a chainmail scrubber to remove any stuck-on residue.

Only use steel wool or a metal scrubber to remove rust before re-seasoning.

Can I put my cast iron pan in the dishwasher?

No. Cast iron cookware should always be washed by hand. A dishwasher can strip the seasoning and cause rust.
